Peeta comes from a world completely different than Katniss'. He grew up always having food on the table and playing the role of a child, not a parent. Because of this, he is not as good of a fighter as Katniss and has less chance of becoming a victor.
Primrose Everdeen: Primrose (also known as Prim) is Katniss' sister. Katniss provides for her and acts as a mother figure to her. Prim is viewed as a character that is somewhat opposite of Katniss. She is more delicate and feminine.
Haymitch: Haymitch is a former District 12 winner of the Hunger Games. His role is to mentor Katniss and Peeta. He is supposed to give them strategies to survive in the Games, but ends up being drunk most of the time and of little help.
President Snow: The president of the Capitol and all of the districts. He is evil and has no remorse for killing off others. Snow is power hungry and will do anything to stay in power and keep rebellions under control.
Setting
The movie is set in the future. The country they live in is called Panem and it is divided into 12 districts. The Capitol holds all of the power over the districts.
Plot
Every year the Capitol hosts the Hunger Games as a punishment for the districts rebelling against the Capitol in the past. Two people are chosen at random from each of the 12 districts to participate in the Games and fight to their death, with only one winner. The selection process is called the Reaping. After the Reaping, Prim gets chosen as the female tribute. Katniss immediately volunteers as tribute so that way her sister does not have to go into the Games. Katniss quickly finds out that her male companion from district 12 is Peeta Mallark. Katniss and Peeta have little time to say goodbye to their loved ones and are forced onto a train to the Capitol. They are pampered and prepped for a few days prior to the Games. They have a support team that help them prepare and train. Katniss and Peeta's team consists of Haymitch, Cinna (stylist), and Effie (the district 12 representative from the Capitol). During the live televised interviews Peeta reveals that he has a crush on Katniss. At first Katniss is upset about this, but then realizes it is a survival strategy. Peeta made her look vulnerable, therefor making the people more likely to want to help her out if she needs it during the games. (The people from the Capitol can send gifts into the games to certain tributes of their choosing). Then, Katniss and Peeta enter the Games. Katniss is usually on her own but quickly discovers that Peeta has teamed up with others and they are out to hunt her. Katniss later finds out that this is just a survival tactic. Katniss' life is saved by a young girl named Rue, who Katniss becomes quickly attached to. Katniss ends up seeing Rue get murdered and has a new found determination to win the Games. Once this happens, the Game Maker announces that there can be two winners, but they must be from the same district. By the end of a bloody few days, it is Katniss and Peeta left as the only two tributes. Once this happens, they believe that they have won the Games, but the announcer states that the rules were made back to normal and there can only be one winner. They have grown quite fond of each other and know that they can not kill one another, so they decide that at the same time they will both eat poisonous berries and die together. Right before they eat the berries, the announcer states that they both are victors of the Games, and they are taken out of the arena. Katniss and Peeta keep up with being star-crossed lovers so that way they do not get punished by the Capitol for trying to defy the Games. They are hoping that Snow will think that the entire reason they did the berry-scene was because they could not live without each other. The reality of it is that they wanted to silently defy the Capitol. In the end, Katniss sees that rebellions have started all because of her and Peeta's actions. She is excited, but scared because she knows what Snow and the Capitol are capable of.
